2012 Highlights !!!

Wow - 2012 was a major year for Under the Spell!!!

If you haven't been following us on Facebook or taking in our shows in DC and NYC, you might missed out!  Here are a few highlights:

Written and directed by Lauren Cooper roughdraftofmylife is a one-act play that chronicles the struggles of a modern African American woman through four female characters. 

Under the Spell mounted a production of roughdraft in August 2011. 

We re-mounted the show in 2012 as part of the DC Black Theater Festival in June 2012.  

Both productions played to sold-out audiences, and the project received favorable reviews from the critical press. 

Congrats to Lauren and the amazing cast and crew who brought roughdraft to audiences in Washington, D.C.!!

The Fire This Time Festival (Production Partner)

Under the Spell Productions continued to partner with The Fire This Time Festival in New York’s East Village, as a platform for rising playwrights of African descent. The festival presented its 3^rd season of theater programming in January 2012. 

The Fourth Season starts this month, and we are so excited about the amazing work and talent coming out of this festival.  More info here:  www.firethistimefestival.com

And those are just the highlights folks.  We also pushed forward short play or two, continued to develop our original web series, and began development on a new music-theater piece.  STAY TUNED!!!!

roughdraft appeared in the Hip Hop Theater Festival in 2002 and 2003. Also in 2003, roughdraftofmylife traveled to the National Black Theater Festival as a featured presentation in the late night salon series.

Under the Spell Seeks Production support for Web Series

Help Wanted:  She's Out of Order - Comedic Webseries

This comedic web-series was conceived by Teresa Michelle Lasley and focuses on an African-American arts and culture reporter. Everyday frustrations such as rude customer service and dropped cell phone calls provide our heroine with humorous opportunities to try very, very hard to stay level-headed. She’s Out of Order strives to entertain and challenge audiences to embrace a nuanced and relatable modern black woman.

Teresa Michelle Lasley is performing the starring role, with Rhonney Greene attached as director. Episodes are being written by Derek Lee McPhatter, with Aymar Jean Christian signed on as the videographer and co-producer.

Shooting is scheduled over a two-week period in July 2011 in metropolitan Philadelphia, PA.
